Jeep Off-Roading Guide

Driving off-road is all about being prepared and having the right equipment for the job. While having a Jeep vehicle is the first step to that, Philadelphia, Center City, South Jersey, and Delaware County drivers should remain informed on proper off-road technique.

It's for that reason that our team at Family Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram has compiled this Jeep off-roading guide. Read more to learn the equipment you should use, along with how you can prepare yourself to hit the trails the right way.

How to Use a 4x4 Driveline

The most important tool you have while navigating off-road driving is the trusty 4x4 driveline. This system enables drivers to have more control while negotiating rough terrain by providing turning force to all four wheels. A 4x4 driveline can come in full-time or part-time modes depending on how your vehicle is equipped.

A part-time 4x4 driveline uses two wheels by default while allowing drivers to activate a 4x4 mode with the press of a button. A full-time 4x4 system uses all four wheels all the time, allowing for much greater control. 4x4 drivelines and AWD drivelines are very similar, however, 4x4 drivelines offer a Low-Range mode.

In order to help you get out of ruts and other difficult topography, many 4x4 drivelines allow you to switch into a Low-Range mode. This feature allows you to achieve more torque at lower gears, so you can push yourself out off difficult spots more easily.

Helpful Jeep Off-Roading Accessories

There's a lot that you need to consider when you're traveling off-road, that's why you want to use the proper accessories for the journey. Jeep off-road vehicles feature off-roading parts and accessories which help to make crawling a little easier.

It's no surprise that your undercarriage will see some action while you're negotiating steep inclines and large rocks. That's why you'll want to make sure your vehicle is equipped with skid plates to protect your vehicle from obstacles. These plates will take the brunt of the scrapes when moving over rocks and other debris.

To further help with that, another Jeep off-roading part is the available Quadra-Lift® Air Suspension System. Turn this feature on when you need to get over an object and your Jeep will lift itself up some more to provide extra ground clearance.

How to Stay Safe on the Trail

It's no secret that while it's good to have the right equipment for off-roading, the best tool is your own knowledge of the trail. Remember to approach obstacles slowly without using the throttle too much. When navigating rocks, you want to crawl over them slowly and evenly.
